Between approximately 8 am on 25 June and 7 am on 26 June, the short outfall pipe discharged untreated wastewater into Tarakena Bay.

Signs are in place along the coastline to alert water users of areas which may be impacted by this event. Water quality samples will be collected from coastal locations once improved weather conditions allow.

Check LAWA.org.nz before visiting beaches along the south coast.

On behalf of Hutt City Council, we’re replacing, like-for-like, approximately 10km of drinking water and wastewater pipes across Hutt City before July 2026.

Following recent condition assessments and leak incidents, we’ve identified more than 40 lengths of drinking and wastewater pipes across the city for replacement.

The pipe replacements will reduce leaks and blockages and increase the resilience of our water networks.

It’s part of Hutt City Council’s commitment to replace ageing pipes, reduce leaks and improve the resilience of our networks. The upgrades will reduce water outages and future repair work.

We’re replacing the most critical sections of pipe, keeping in mind network efficiency, environmental protection, and affordability.

Most of the new pipes will be installed in the road berm or under existing footpaths. Traffic management will be set up around work sites to keep people safe and direct traffic where necessary. Our contractors will reinstate each area after the pipes have been installed.

For efficiency reasons, the work has been grouped into different work packages to be delivered by eight local contractors across more than 40 streets.
