Between approximately 9 am on 26 June and 7 am on 26 June, the short outfall pipe discharged untreated wastewater into Tarakena Bay.

Signs are in place along the coastline to alert water users of areas which may be impacted by this event. Water quality samples will be collected from coastal locations once improved weather conditions allow.

Check LAWA.org.nz before visiting beaches along the south coast.

Wellington Water, on behalf of Hutt City Council, will soon be relining the wastewater pipes parallel to Frederick Street (shown in yellow, on the below image). The current pipes are old, and in need of an upgrade to reduce the risk of pipe leaks and blockages.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Crews are expecting to start work on Thursday, 18 June 2026 and be finished by around mid-July 2026 (indicative timeframe).
  • The work involves the relining of existing wastewater pipes at the end of the cul-de-sacs – between McKay and Russell Road.
  • Most of the work is on public land - accessing the manholes only at the end of the cul-de-sacs, with some work on private property (we’ll be in touch directly with any impacted private property owners).
  • There’ll be some traffic management in place and parking limitations on these streets while the work takes place.
  • The construction work will generate noise; we’ll work to minimise this as much as possible.
  • All work will be completed within standard working hours, Monday to Friday 8am-5.30pm (crews will prep site from 7am).
  • PipeWorks (part of Brian Perry Civil) is completing the work on the ground.
