Between approximately 8 am on 25 June and 7 am on 26 June, the short outfall pipe discharged untreated wastewater into Tarakena Bay.

Signs are in place along the coastline to alert water users of areas which may be impacted by this event. Water quality samples will be collected from coastal locations once improved weather conditions allow.

Our team is responding to a wastewater overflow on State Highway 2 which has stopped this afternoon. The overflow was from a manhole on the southbound lanes close to the Ngauranga exit, discharging into the habour through the stormwater drains.

While the overflow has stopped, our teams are working to clear a blockage which still remains. They are working at pace to identify the blockage and get this cleared. 

One southbound lane clasure remains in place approaching Ngauranga while work is underway.

Buick Street public fountain to reopen on Monday 26 June

The Buick Street public fountain will be open again from late morning, Monday 26 June. The fountain was closed in mid-April due to water from the Waiwhetu Aquifer testing positive for E.coli for the third time in five months as well as having an increasing level of bacterial activity.

Wellington Water has installed a small UV unit that will treat the source water before it comes out of the tap. The UV unit is currently being tested to ensure that it’s working correctly and all going well, water from the Buick Street public fountain will be available for collection from late morning, Monday 26 June.

Mark Kinvig, Wellington Water’s Group Manger, Network Strategy and Planning says “UV treatment is a non-chemical treatment option that doesn’t affect the taste of the water. We’re pleased that we are able to reopen this public fountain for people’s use.”
