Between approximately 9 am on 26 June and 7 am on 26 June, the short outfall pipe discharged untreated wastewater into Tarakena Bay.

Signs are in place along the coastline to alert water users of areas which may be impacted by this event. Water quality samples will be collected from coastal locations once improved weather conditions allow.

Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant gas levels returning to normal

Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant operations are returning to normal as gas levels continue to drop following yesterday’s fire. No one was hurt in the incident, and there was no danger to the public.

The fire was reported at 4.30pm on Wednesday. It was brought under control within an hour by Fire and Emergency, who took over the site following high gas level readings as a result of the fire. FENZ has now left the site and Veolia engineers are able to enter.

Temporary ventilation to disperse the gas may lead to a localised increase in odour levels. These are being monitored.

The plant continued to treat wastewater throughout the incident and was operated remotely. Engineers are now able to assess the impact on equipment and are working to repair some plant that was affected by the fire.

Wellington Water and operator Veolia are monitoring operations and are hopeful treatment will continue uninterrupted.
