We’re upgrading underground pump stations in the CBD as part of a major programme of works to increase the resilience and capacity of the wastewater network in central Wellington.
This has included renewing or constructing new wastewater pipes on Taranaki Street, Victoria Street and Wakefield Street.
So that these pipes can increase the efficiency and capacity of the network, we also need to upgrade the pump stations that keep wastewater flowing through them to our treatment plants. We have already completed upgrades at three of the pump stations.

Our next phase of pump station upgrades, supporting the wastewater network in central Wellington, is about to kick off, with three more pump stations lined up for works.
This portion covers:
- Pump Station 2 at Waitangi Park
- Pump Station 3 on Kent Terrace (near Vivian Street)
- Pump Station 4 at Chaffers Street
Our contractor for these works is Brian Perry Civil.
Because these pump stations are located underground – and you might be surprised at how big they are! – there will not be significant noise or vibration caused by these works. There may be occasional odour in the area around the hatch when it is open for the crew to enter or exit, but this will be minimal.
