Tiaki Wai has a regional programme to plan and implement water pressure reduction on behalf of councils.
Planning is underway for pressure reduction and monitoring in multiple suburbs across Wellington City, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua.
We're currently preparing to install two new flow meters in Mungavin Avenue & Champion Street (Cannons Creek, Porirua). This helps us manage water pressure more effectively, by improving our monitoring and control of two existing pressure control valves.
We are then applying water pressure reduction in parts of Miramar, Wellington and Upper Hutt. This work is scheduled to take place in the 2026/27 financial year, pending final design checks. We will provide more details on this work soon.

The purpose of the regional pressure management programme is to achieve more efficient water use. We want water pressure to be at the right level for use in homes and businesses (including for firefighting purposes), but we don’t want the pressure to be higher than it needs to be.
We use modelling techniques and water pressure testing out in the field to understand where pressure is right, and where it’s too high. We then apply pressure reduction in areas where it’s too high. We prioritise areas where we can achieve the highest volume of water savings in the most efficient way.
The programme will play an important role in conserving water, and delivering value for money to ratepayers by:

Reducing leakage in the water network

Extending the life on water pipes and other infrastructure

Reducing the number of pipe bursts
Water pressure varies across the region, depending on a range of factors such as location and elevation. Having pressure management valves that are operational and in good working order is another key factor.
