Porirua Harbour Accord
Te Wai Ora o Parirua – the Porirua Harbour Accord is an agreement to restore the health of Te Awarua o Porirua (Porirua Harbour).
Signed on 6 February 2025, the Accord brought together Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira, Porirua City Council, Greater Wellington Regional Council, Wellington City Council and Wellington Water, alongside stakeholders, community groups, and organisations dedicated to improving the harbour’s health.
On 1 July 2026, Tiaki Wai took over from Wellington Water and local councils as Wellington’s new water entity. On 15 July 2026, we reaffirmed our commitment to the Accord and signed the Porirua Harbour Accord on 15 July 2026.
Key focus areas of the Accord include improving water quality, restoring biodiversity, integrating sustainable water management with urban development, and addressing the impacts of climate change.
Porirua Harbour Accord Action Plan
Following the signing of the Harbour Accord, the partner organisations, led by Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira, worked together to develop an Action Plan to guide collective efforts. This was released on 14 August 2026.
The plan turns a shared vision for the harbour into 20 priority actions across four areas:
- Reducing sediment entering the harbour
- Preventing and managing pollutants and contaminants
- Restoring and protecting natural habitats.
