Summary
On behalf of Wellington City Council, we are undertaking upgrades of the wastewater network in Hataitai. The works involve replacing an existing wastewater main in Waipapa Road with a new wastewater pipe.
This upgrade is part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening the wastewater network throughout Wellington city.
What to expect
- Works - Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm (during school term) and 8am - 5.30pm (during school holidays), Saturdays – 8am - 4pm
- Please follow site signage and keep your distance from the worksite where possible
- Traffic management stop/go will be in place for public and contractor safety
- As the work will be taking place in the road corridor, there will be temporary restrictions to on-street parking in Waipapa Road
- These temporary parking restrictions will apply near the work zone – more specific information will be provided before works start

The Waipapa Road wastewater renewal is part of a broader programme of work in Hataitai that supports a future upgrade of the area's trunk sewer network. The existing wastewater pipes in this area are in poor condition and allow non-wastewater flows, such as groundwater and stormwater, to enter the sewer network.
During heavy rainfall this contributes to increased flows and places additional pressure on the system.
At present, excess wastewater flows during wet weather are managed through engineered overflow points in Hataitai. These overflow points prevent wastewater from surfacing in streets and private properties, but they can result in diluted wastewater being discharged to the stormwater network and in some cases, into Evans Bay.

We’re continuing our focus on strengthening parts of the aging wastewater network across Wellington city.
This week we’ve started works to lay approximately 700 metres of new wastewater pipe in Waipapa Road.
Replacing these types of old wastewater pipes helps maintain network resilience and reliability, reducing the risk of blockages and wastewater overflows.
