Wellington CBD Wastewater Programme

Overview
Background
Programme details

Wellington City Council has invested in a major programme of work to upgrade, renew and reconfigure part of the rising main and pump station network in the CBD.

This is a significant programme of work to upgrade, renew and reconfigure the wastewater network in the Wellington CBD, to provide resilience, flexibility and capacity for growth.

It comprises new rising mains (pumped wastewater pipes) on Taranaki Street and Wakefield Street, connecting to renewed wastewater pipes on Wakefield Street, Victoria Street, Dixon Street, Oriental Parade and Kent Terrace.

In addition, underground pump stations are being upgraded to support the new pipes to manage and divert flows when needed, to reduce the chances of a repeat of the Willis Street burst in 2019.

Works are currently underway on the next package of pump station upgrades, and are scheduled to run from September 2026 to February 2027. This portion includes:

  • Pump Station 2 at Waitangi Park
  • Pump Station 3 on Kent Terrace (near Vivian Street)
  • Pump Station 4 at Chaffers Street

Our contractor for these works is Brian Perry Civil.

The final stage of works for the Victoria Street Rising Main will complete the renewal of wastewater pipes between Wakefield Street and Willis Street, running up Victoria and turning right onto Dixon Street. Design is complete and planning is underway to begin construction of this final section before the end of the year.
